Last Reflection :)

This practicum class has been a wonderful experience. I was very nervous upon beginning this class because of my lack of experience working this group of children. I have mentioned this in other reflections that I have never worked with this age in a classroom setting and being assigned a group that had a middle school child scared me. I discovered while doing this practicum while the material may be more advanced than what I teach my sweet little babies, but like my sweet little babies the older students just want to feel loved and accepted. I have enjoyed being able to plan lessons that cover more advanced materials. I am hoping that my degree from Furman will open the door to work with older students.
During this program I really enjoyed teaching the multiplication lesson and thought it went really well. My students enjoyed the lesson and were really engaged in the whole time. I also enjoyed working in small groups for math in the morning. I work with small groups with my students but this was challenging for both them and me.
Overall this experience has been a wonderful experience. I felt very nervous but now feel confident about the things that I can handle in the classroom as far as material goes.

  1. Lauren,

It is wonderful that you have enjoyed and learned from the complexities that come along with teaching older students. Perhaps one day you will find yourself teaching older students and you will feel less anxious about it because of this experience. I know you are looking forward to going back to preschool though.

  2. I'm so glad you feel more confident to work with older students now! Small groups are definitely a wonderful method to use with older students who need to start working with each other and practicing cooperative learning. Multiplication is sooo vital for students to learn as early as possible and I'm so glad they got some extra practice with you!

  6. You have done a great job and I know the students have enjoyed working with you. Working with different age groups will help us all to find the age group we do best with.

    Best of luck!
